What is a Person of Opinion?

A ‘Person of Opinion’ uses his/her own judgement to decide what is best for him/her. This is bad if ALLAH, Most High, and His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, have given us guidance already. This guidance is in the form of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

“O you who have believed, obey ALLAH and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.” (Qur’an, Muhammad 47:33)

Without that guidance we would wander the world in blindness. Such are the disbelievers.

“Indeed, for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made pleasing to them their deeds, so they wander blindly.” (Qur’an An-Naml 27:4)

However, there are Muslims who wander the world in a similar manner of blindness, precisely when they decide to not adhere to the Qur’an and Sunnah and decide to use their own opinions on matters that necessitate guidance.

They use their own Opinions for three main reasons:

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

All praise is due to ALLAH and peace and blessing upon His Messenger

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

1. Arrogance. They are convinced they know better. This is the sin of Iblis. It was his opinion that he was better than Adam, peace be upon him, that made him not bow to Adam despite ALLAH, Most High, ordering him to do so. He was cursed as a result.

See ‘Answer to Which Sin is Worst.’

2 and 3. Desire and Duniya. They simply feel and want to do what they want to do – and enjoy their lives. Such people are equated to dogs in the Qur’an. They are very materialistic and are so immersed in this world (duniya) they are heedless of all the signs in this universe, in this world, and all around them – let alone Allah’s Help to them via revelation (Qur’an) and a guide (Sunnah). They are worse than cattle. They simply don’t care.

Evidence: ALLAH, Most High, Says:

“And if We had willed, we could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.” (Qur’an, Al-A’raf 7:176)

“And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like cattle; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.” (Qur’an, Al-A’raf 7:179)

And in terms of the disbelievers, they are like the dead.

“Is he who was dead and We gave him life and set for him a light (of belief) whereby he can walk amongst men — like him who is in the (depths of) darkness from which he can never come out?” (Qur’an, Al-An’am 6:122)

“The blind and the seer are not equal.

Nor are the living and the dead; God causes whomever He wills to hear. You cannot make hearers out of those in the graves.” (Quran, Fatir 35:19 and 22)

“You cannot make the dead, nor the deaf, hear the call, if they turn away.” (Quran, An-Naml 27:80)

What we can say is the danger with such people is they have traded ALLAH, Most High – Al-Haqq (The Reality), for their own whims, which they have elevated as a god (!) despite the false nature (i.e. the un-reality) of this wishful thinking. This is the dire warning to us all from the Qur’an:

ALLAH, Most High, Says:

“Have you seen he who has taken as his god his (own) desire, and ALLAH has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after ALLAH? Then will you not be reminded.” (Qur’an, Al-Jathiya 45:23)

سبحان ربك رب العزة عما يصفون وسلام على المرسلين والحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله محمد وعلى اله وصحبه أجمعين

Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they attribute to Him, and peace be upon the Messengers, and all praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe. And the peace and blessing upon prophet Mohammed and his relatives and all his companions.
