Understanding Deen al-Hanifiyyah part 3 – Shaikh Fakhriy -15th Dec 2023

In this khutbah, Sheikh Fakhriy gives the evidences for the fact that the religion of Allah is one and it is Islam based on the religion of Ibrahim (Millatul Ibrahim). And this is the religion of Musa, also, based on Millatul Ibrahim. And this is the religion of ‘Isa (Jesus), based on the millatul Ibrahim. And, also, this is the religion of Muhammad, peace be upon him, who has been ordered to follow the Millatul Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, the nation of Musa and the nation of Jesus, turned away form this Millah/ from this deen. This is not the words of the sheikh. But, it is from the very words of Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala: the qur’an. All the evidence demonstrates that the people of Musa are not following the religion of Musa, which is Islam, and similarly, the people of ‘Isa are not following the religion of ‘Isa – which is Islam. All such evidence can be found in the qur’an.

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

All praise is due to Allah and peace and blessing upon His Messenger

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says: “And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere [mukhliseen] to Him in deen [way of life, religion], hanifan [inclining to truth], and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct deen [way of life, religion].” (Qur’an, al-Bayyinah 98:5)

So, the sheikh explains that by ‘they’ in this verse – this is referring to the Jews and Christians [which can be confimed also by reading the preceding verse]. And, they were not ordered except to know Allah only – i.e., to ‘worship Allah’ – like what prophet Ibrahim did – and to love Him and to glorify Him and to obey Him. This is what Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says in this verse. According to the Millatul Ibrahim.

There must be sincerity in this religion (from ‘mukhliseen’ – cognate to ‘ikhlas’, sincerity) – not only to know Allah and love Him – but to be sincere in this way!

And then, Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says, ‘hunafa’! – Yes to love Allah, to obey HIm, and to be sincere in this way – but it should be according to the Millatul Ibrahim. That’s why Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, said in the Suratul Nahl (surah 16) – as mentioned before in previous khutbahs (see part 1 and 2) – ‘And we have revealed to you to follow the Millatul Ibrahim hanifan…’

Then in surah Bayyinah, Allah says to establish salat and pay the zakat – which both the Chirstians and the Jews were ordered to do. And ‘this is the correct religion.’ Why? Because it is based on the Millatul Ibrahim: Millahtul Tawheed. So Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, revealed to Ibrahim, to Musa, to ‘Isa and to Muhammad (peace be to them all) what? The shari’ah of the heart (the hidden shari’ah inside us) – which is to know Allah by heart – as the angel, Jibril (peace be upon him) taught Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his people when the angel came to him and asked him, ‘What is Islam?’ [hadith Jibril – cf. Imam Nawwawwi’s 40 hadith Qudi no. 2] and he responded: ‘the five pillars’ – this is the apparent shari’ah in Islam; the hidden shari’ah is the Imaan [i.e., with reference to Jibril’s second question], which is the shari’ah of the heart – which is to know Allah, love Him, obey Him, glorify Him alone – only!

So, Ibrahim, Musa, ‘Isa, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all) were ordered to achieve the hidden shari’ah and to achieve the apparent shari’ah, which is the pillars of Islam. And this is very clear in the suratul Bayyinah.

Part 2

Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says: “They have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, when under a covenant [of protection] from Allâh, and from people [i.e., the Muslims]. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destruction [or destitution]. That is because they disbelieved [‘yakfuruna’ – cognate of ‘kafir’: i.e., cover over the Truth/ disbelieve] in [i.e., rejected] the Ayât [proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.] of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed [Allâh] and [habitually] transgressed beyond bounds [in Allâh’s disobedience, crimes and sins].” (Qur’an, ali Imran 3:112)

In surah ali Imran, Allah, the Most Exalted, says, ‘Because they turned away from the religion of Musa and the religion of ‘Isa, they are kuffar. Allah said this. Not us.

Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says: “Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of Dâwûd [David] and ‘Îsâ [Jesus], son of Maryam [Mary]. That was because they disobeyed [Allâh and the Messengers] and [habitually] transgressed beyond bounds.” (Qur’an, al-Ma’idah 5:78)

And Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says in the surah al-Ma’idah, that they had been humiliated and they have been cursed with a lack of humility and a lack of manners. Why? What is the reason that Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, did this? He has been made to feel angered by them. Cf., surah al-Fatihah (Qur’an 1:7), ‘al-maghdubi alayhim‘ [those whom have earned his wrath] and ‘al-dhaalin‘ [those who were astray]. Why? Because in surah ali Imran, it was because they disbelieved. Look! They disbelieved! (1) This is first. And, also because they killed the prophets (2).

And in the same verse he explains the cause of these two things as having two reasons. And these two reasons are also what happened to Iblis (the devil). This is the way of Iblis when Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, dismissed him from His mercy. What are these two things that made the Christians and Jews to become disbelievers and to kill their prophets?

  1. Disobeying the order of Allah.
  2. Habitually transgressing beyond all bounds.

Look now in Gaza.

They used to kill people too back then: women, children. Because they used to kill prophets! Do you know what this means by killing the prophets? Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, sent them to guide the people to achieve Tawheed: how to know Him, how to love Him, how to obey Him, how to glorify Him. Yet, they killed the prophets. Because of these two things.

Iblis did it also before them: 1) disobeying and 2) habitually transgressing all bounds.

So we must warn ourselves of these two things. We must follow the meaning of the words of Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, and obey His orders, and not to become transgressors, because these two things will lead to what? To the kufr. To disbelief. This is what happened to the people of Musa and to the people of ‘Isa. While, with the poeple of Muhammad (peace be upon him) you know, they believe. They follow the Millah of Ibrahim. They follow the deen of Muhammad (peace be upon him). That is why our prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us to say in the morning and evening (the adhkar) – and this is a proof that the deen of Muhammad (peace be upon hm) and the deen of Allah, Most Exalted, is based on the two pillars of Ibrahim (peace be upon him): ‘Asbahna ‘ala fitratul Islam’ > it is a creation inside us to submit to Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala. And to achieve tawheed to Him (to know HIm, to love Him, to obey Him, to glorify Him). This is a creation inside everyone of mankind.

Al-Islam, therefore, is fitrah.

‘Wa kalima-tul Ikhlas’.

The pillar, Aqeedatul Tawheed that Ibrahim initiated. Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, sent down to him this aqeedah – to follow it and to follow the fitrah (Fitratul Islam).

‘Wa deeni Muhammad (peace be upon him).’

‘Wa millatu abeena Ibrahim (peace be upon him) – the Millah of our father, Ibrahim.

Cf., the adkhar from the hadith: “Ubayy ibn Ka’b reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us to say when we entered the morning, “We have entered the morning upon the pure nature of Islam, the word of sincerity, the Sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and the religion of our father Abraham, the monotheist, the Muslim who was not one of the idolaters.” (Source: Musnad Aḥmad 21144.) (We would say the same when we enter the evening too, by replacing the words ‘morning’ with ‘evening’.)

Our prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this. This is the religion of Allah. And then Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, in the surah Ma’idah, said that these people (i.e., the Jews and the Christians) did not base their conception upon the Millatul Ibrahim – but that they were cursed by the tongues of Dawud and ‘Isa (peace be upon them). Between Dawud and ‘isa (peace be upon them), there was about 1,000 years. And in between that time they had been cursed.

And then, when ‘Isa came to establish the Millatul Ibrahim (Aqeedatul Tawheed) – then what? They tried to kill him! Before him they killed Zakariyya and Yahya (peace be upon them)!

So what [do they care] about children and women of Gaza?

Prophet Yahya (peace be upon him) was a very wise prophet for them. Yet, they killed him. So ‘Isa cursed them. These are not our words. These are the words of Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala. So, what about Muhammad, peace be upon him)? Also, they tried to kill him – many times. You know the story.

And now, they try to kill the nation of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) – i.e., the nation of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that if any Jew or Christian hears about me but does not believe in me, Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, will place him in the hell-fire.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, none from this nation of Jews and Christians hears of me, and then dies without having faith in my message, but that he will be an inhabitant of Hellfire.” (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 153.)

This is an authentic hadith.
